South Carolina Club for Growth Hails Sanford Tax Proposal

1/17/07

South Carolina Club for Growth Executive Director Joshua Gross tonight hailed Governor Mark Sanford’s proposed income tax cut as a winner for South Carolinians.

“Clearly, the Governor’s call for an income tax cut will do well for our state’s economy and will help pull our persistent unemployment numbers out of the doldrums.”

“Still, in light of what other states have done, as the Governor mentioned tonight, we would like to see even greater reductions to make us more competitive with neighboring states like Tennessee and Florida which have no income tax.”

“We call on our friends and allies in the Legislature to approximate what New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona and Rhode Island have already done – use a greater portion of the surplus to cut the top marginal income tax rate to 5% to spur economic growth and development.”

“We also believe the tradeoff in cigarette tax increases will be more than worth it if a meaningful income tax cut is the end result.”

“At the end of the day, while we would prefer a larger cut than the Governor has proposed, this tax cut proposal will help move us in the right direction as we compete with other states for economic development dollars.”
