SC Club for Growth Scoring Alert – Budget Vetoes

6/27/13
The South Carolina Club for Growth urges all Senators to vote “NO” on any motion to override Governor Haley’s budget vetoes.

The Senate has the opportunity to sustain 53 budget vetoes which total up to over $91 million. Every reasonable Senator should be willing to sustain these vetoes.

Yesterday, the House sustained $3.7 million in budget vetoes. This meager number could have doubled but certain members changed their minds on the second vote for some vetoes. For a body with a majority of Republicans there is a staggering amount of waste, pork and earmarks that went untouched.

We hope the Senate will choose to finish the job that the House started. From onetime money for reoccurring expenses (vetoes 21 and 22), pet projects (vetoes 31, 61-64, 70), and irresponsible budgeting (vetoes 69 and 70) there is still a lot of work to be done.

Today is a great opportunity for those Senators who campaigned on fiscal responsibility to show they are serious about the promises they made.

Responsible spending has been a focus of the South Carolina Club for Growth since our founding. Votes from this year’s budget veto message will be a part of the SC Club for Growth’s 2013 Scorecard.
