
South Carolina’s General Assembly meets yearly in Columbia, typically from early January until early June. Legislative sessions last two years and after these two years have expired, legislative members must refile any pending legislation.

The South Carolina Senate consists of 46 members elected November 4, 2008, to serve until Monday after the General Election in November of 2012. The 2009-2012 Senate is currently made up of 26 Republicans and 20 Democrats.

The South Carolina House of Representatives consists of 124 members elected November 4, 2008, to serve until Monday after the General Election in November of 2010. The 2009-2010 House of Representatives is currently made up of 71 Republicans and 52 Democrats, with one vacancy to be filled in the spring of 2009.
